On hardpack or rock, these shoes perform well. The mesh is nice for keeping them cool and helps to make the shoes really light, but it is a huge problem whenever you go across sand. Sand comes in through the mesh on the toes, but cannot escape through the rubber rand. Just a couple of steps through a wash and you feel like your shoe is two sizes too small. On a recent trip through the Utah desert I had to resort to super-gluing a piece of fabric over the toe box.
