5Great shoes for working
By Brian
These were purchased for my fiancee who has to wear protective shoes on her job. They are nice and lightweight compared to anything else she has had. The last pair she had lasted over a year, which is a long time for the use she puts them under. She also wears them as casual shoes occasionally.

5comfortable and durable
By Stephen Lowery
My son is very active on his feet. We typically by Walmart-type shoes for him because he is so hard on them and wears them out in about 2-3 months. We happened on these (in the wrong size) at a clearance sale in a local boot store. We bought them because they were 1) cheap, 2) Wolverine, 3) steel-toed. He wore them and they proved to be near indestrcutable (pardon the exaggeration.) His only complaint was, of course, the fit was wrong so I ordered them from Amazon in the right size and he loves them. I will probably get a pair myself. As a firefighter they meet safety standards around the station and will be more comfortable and lighter than boots.

5Great shoes once you break them in
By Kelly M. McClendon
I bought these for work (of course) I like the style and look of the shoe. I didnt want a traditional looking steel toe and thats what I got. They look way better in person than in the picture. I bought mine a half a size bigger at 10 1/2 in order to account for feet swelling and so I can put an arch support in them. When I first wore them I was ok then later on they started to pinch my toe. Luckily, we got snow here and when I got snow on them and got them wet it accelerated the breaking in process because now they are as comfortable as my sneakers. Love the shoe, very comfortable cushion, made me a fan of Wolverine shoes. I suggest if you dont know your size to go try on a pair at a retailer to make sure, thats what I did.

3Not a running shoe for real feel.
By Ahiker
Critique: I have been trail running for years and for about the last 3/4 of a year I switched to a minimalist shoe called the brooks pure connect because I also do a decent amount of road running. Those shoes are ultralight weight and extremely flexible. They don't have a raised heel so my stride can follow through better. However they have rounded relatively smooth soles so when I go trail running if the trail is the least bit damp they love to slip. I saw these shoes and I really like the sound of the company and was intrigued by the off set lacing system. After watching a youtube review and seeing the other reviews on this shoe I was sold. lightweight, doesn't retain moisture, great trail runner, ect... I took these out the first day for a short 2 mile run with the dogs and it was the hardest run I have run in a long time. My heels were hitting too soon and messing up my stride, my calves were working overtime to compensate for the stiffness of the sole, and over all it was extremely difficult. In addition it weighs a substantial amount. I have some Merrell hiking boots that I normally use for backpacking and hiking. These shoes and the Merrell boot are pretty much the same weight. I kid you not! I handed them to my roommate to see if it was just me, but neither of us couldn't tell which weighed more.Upside: The shoe does seem to be very well constructed. I do like the offset lacing system, it lets the toes bend more naturally. It has a sole similar in stiffness to a backpacking boot meaning it doesn't really bend past the ball of the foot which will help prevent arch fatigue. It is lighter than a lot of hiking boots. The shoe is very solid. I have been looking to get away from boots because after a while the higher boots tend to crease and rub against my ankle bone. I would have returned these since they are definitely not a running shoe in my opinion but I think that anyone looking for a good hiking shoe should check these out. It is a quality shoe, and it comes from a good company.

5Lightning Review
By natkendallmusic
I received these shoes as a promotional deal and I couldn't be more happy. I'm a very picky consumer when it comes to shoes- style, feel, and comfort. The Lightning nailed all of these and they fit like a glove the second I put them on. I'm also proud to support a company based out of Bozeman, Montana. If you're looking for a shoe that is built to last, comfortable and stylish then give this a try!

4Scarpa Spark - 5-star if the quality control was better.
By rnnhntr
I bought two pairs of these shoes since I do a lot of ultras and previous commenters noted that they run wide. The first pair has worked out quite well, I am a EE and they run around an E to EE width. I have run about 130 miles in them so far, including a couple of tough 50 kilometer trail runs in them, and they are holding up better than any of my previous shoes, give good trail feel, have good traction on a wide variety of terrain ranging from snow and mud to steep and technical ups and downs, and the rock guard offers enough protection that my feet do not get beat up. Temperatures for my runs have ranged from freezing with snow to dry and in the high 80's and the shoes have been reasonably comfortable throughout. When wet they dry adequately, but are not so porous that they let in a lot of dirt and grit. Now for the down side. I was so happy with the first pair that I bought a second. The first time I wore them, I went to tighten the laces and one of the lacing loops ripped out, so quality control may be an issue. That said, I will replace the defective ones with another pair and hope they are as stout as the first pair. If the second pair had not ripped out I would have rated them a 5 out of 5.Update - I have two pairs of the Sparks and now have several hundred miles on each pair of them, including running the 2012 Western States 100. After Western States, my feet were still in good shape, with no black toenails, and only three minor blisters that I didn't discover until after finishing the race. Also, no bruising of the soles of my feet. I am still very happy with them, and they are wearing better than other shoes I have used. I do agree with another reviewer that the lacing loops could be improved, but they are holding up so far. on these two pairs.

4La sportiva vertical K
By jan kriska
I have purchased La Sportiva Vertical K for my wife, son and myself. We all have extensive experience running with these shoes. My wife and myself put few hundred miles on the shoes in the mountains of North Carolina, Southern Virginia. The terrain is varied from sharp rocky, rootsy trails to slickrock. There was consensus between my wife and me that these shoes feel like slippers and that they are unique. They have good grip on the rock thanks to the sticky proprietary rubber that La Sporiva is known for. They feel " tall" with higher centre of gravity. That makes it tough to run when tired. They get tangled over the trail scree easily. Great on smooth gravel and hardpack. They feel unstable on the slanted terrain. The toe protection is not great as with other La Sportiva trail running shoes. Missing rock plate is occasionally needed especially when sharp rock pokes trough the soft sole between the ribs of the rubber. They run 1/2-1 size smaller. My son raced TransRockies run (120 miles in 6 days) with the shoes new out of box. He liked them very much. Conclusion: Fast "minimalist" trail shoe for shorter runs ( less than 20 miles), good for racing. Not recommended on technical trails with lot of trail scree especially sharp rocks. Cannot wait for the new version with rock plate!

4Superior Grip for rocky trails
By HP Seaton
I can't say enough good things about the grip on these shoes. Sometimes I swear I am running straight up the side of cliffs (ok...very big rocks, but let me dream a little). They are very light weight, yet pack a smooth ride. Definitely go a full size up (or more) over your regular shoes. I did that and still had to remove the insole. Without the insole I have pretty good ground feel, not as good as my NB 010 or 110, but still pretty good for the comfort they give me.I'm hoping La Sportiva will get rid of the insole and go more in a 'one piece' design direction. That said, these shoes are a superb choice for anyone tearing into rocky single track. I run a lot of miles on the Appalachian Trail here in PA and these shoes have made it into the rotation with my NB110s, and that's saying alot!

5Great 1st (or 2nd) or crack climbing shoe
By Timothy D. Ulmen
These shoes are comfortable. If you get them 1/2 size too small. . . they'll stretch. They were my first climbing shoes. I was able to get through 5.11's and V4's with them without being able to blame the shoes. They are leather which as mentioned before, they'll stretch. As they stretch they conform to your foot perfectly. I highly recommend them. Get them as snug as is comfortable. . . at first. . . or uber tight if you're more experienced. One last note, they' are great for hand cracks!

5Shoes really matter - but not for the reasons you think: Why Inov-8 gets it right.
By Joel G.
Shoes really matter, but not for the reasons most weekend warriors think. For example, if you spend a lot of time looking for high cushioning and support, or if you buy shoes because a sales guy at the running store put you on a treadmill and video your feet to show you how a certain shoe "corrects" your stride, you might be caught off-guard by the Inov-8 approach. Here's why:During recent decades, running shoes have been designed to help initially prevent injuries in poorly conditioned legs and feet by building shoes that replace natural body functions with artificial stabilization and extra cushioning. The resulting problem is that the person using those shoes initially becomes more aerobically fit and starts running faster and longer... without their feet and legs being structurally strengthened to handle the increased demand. Before long, the shoes can't continue to compensate for the fact that the person's feet and legs' inner structures simply aren't trained to handle the running. It's too-much too-soon meets too-little too-late. Consequently, painful "overuse" injuries (shinsplints, knee pain, back pain, stress fractures, tendonitis, fasciitis, etc.) are practically an inevitability for many well-intentioned and dedicated aspiring runners who take up jogging or join a cross country or track team.A very large number of "overuse" injuries in otherwise healthy people result from a combination of two factors. 1) Weak/underused feet and leg structures, as described above; & 2) Bad running form - it doesn't immediately hurt to run improperly on 2" of cushioning, but bad form will catch up to you as you increase mileage. Really, the problem isn't "overuse" so much as "use" when, thanks to laziness and bad shoes, critical parts of our bodies are only conditioned to "under-use".The solution is to make the following transition: Stop running in shoes that put us on a cushy path to a painful destination and carefully learn to run in shoes that enable our bodies to run the way we were actually built to run. Most people are completely capable of much more running than you might think, but it takes a little work to correct years of under-use. This transition will require a little patience as you build the strength in your legs and feet to avoid injuries. It will also require learning to run with healthier running form, which is a lot easier on your body as well as more efficient for long distance.Inov-8 shoes are designed to enable your foot, not to support it to the extent of replacing natural foot functions. In other words, if you are out of shape and decide to start running 20+ miles per week exclusively in this shoe, you are taking a risk. The shoes are designed for the runner who is making or has already made the transition as described above. Inov-8's entire product line is built on a minimalist philosophy. More and more runners and fitness buffs are realizing that the Inov-8 approach is, indeed, a better approach. (Not to mention a darned good shoe in terms of materials and quality as well as design.)If you have not carefully transitioned to a minimalist running style and built up strong feet and legs for this type of shoe, a sudden switch could injure you. Take the transition slowly because your feet and legs need to get strong enough to actually do what they are built to do.Inov-8 shoes are generally comfortable, very well built, and perfectly able to carry a fit runner through many hundreds, and even a thousand, happy miles. However, they do not replace under-used arches or compensate for pounding, heel-striking strides. (Contrary to popular myth, flat-footed runners can run just fine in these shoes - if they get their feet and legs in shape. Flat feet are not the running liability many have been lead to believe. See the "comments" for more on flat feet.)How can I say all this? I have flat feet, terrible pronation, and am 6'3" tall. I ran four years of cross country in high school and was on the varsity squad for a state-championship team. The whole time, I fought miserable shinsplints, knee pain, and back pain. I popped Advil like tic-tacs. I loved the sport and ran relatively good 5K times but my chronic pain was bad enough to sideline me for all of track season senior year. Any time I increased my intensity or mileage, the problems got worse. Doctors were talking about "scar tissue" and "surgery". Well-meaning doctors told me to stop running. They said my body just wasn't made for it. Shoe-store employees continued to put me into higher support, more motion control, more cushioning to try and "correct" my feet and legs.It wasn't until college that a former teammate (who is now a professional runner partially sponsored by Inov-8) explained the concept of minimalist running to me. Although I was in good aerobic condition, I spent a month resting and then the better part of three months carefully re-training from scratch, patiently overhauling my form to be more efficient, working my way into exclusively running in racing flats (Inov-8 wasn't available yet), and allowing my feet and legs to get much stronger and more flexible.Since then, I run further and faster than ever before, with no more "overuse injury" bullcrap. My training mileage has at one point been greater than 90 miles per week. I have competed in a major marathon and placed in the top 4 in my age group. I have won a handful of smaller races. Better yet, I have not been injured or hurt ONCE since I made that transition to minimalist shoes and better running form. I haven't even owned a pair of traditional "trainer" shoes in over 8 years. (Much of my training is in an old pair of trashed racing flats with at least 1,500 miles on them. I prefer to use Inov-8 for more rugged terrain and tougher trails, where they excel, but they have models that make good trainers on almost any terrain. When my beloved racing flats finally die, I'll replace them with an Inov-8 racing model.)I consider myself a "weekend warrior" and I am a far cry from an "elite" runner. Had I listened to the well-meaning doctors who told me I just wasn't built to run and should give it up, I would have stopped years ago. Inov-8 understands that we humans are literally built to be running machines. Tap into it, and enjoy.

4Inov-8 F-Lite 195
By Jessica
I am avid Crossfitter and have found these shoes to be the best while working out. They are minimalist, but still have enough of a sole for running and any other fast paced movement. Inov-8s have a perfect balance of lightweight, traction, and durability to them. These shoes breathe extremely well, very important while working out. Additionally, the liner fabric is comfortable enough with or without socks. I have put these shoes through paces and have still managed to remain in great condition. They feel light as a feather and they provide just enough protection from all the workouts I do. If you want to avoid cushioning, overblown support, and padding, these shoes are for you! Inov-8s are the next best thing to a "barefoot shoe". If you are looking for a shoe for lifting, running, rowing, and much more activity, then Inov-8s are for you.

5Amazing shoe!
By David E. Rominger
They fit better than any shoe I've ever owned. The low back where the heel sits means that there is no chance of abrasion on the achilles tendon and the laces accomodate my fairly-wide just fine. I run on trails and the road using a natural running method (POSE, Chi, Evolution) and this shoe is the best compromise between being barefoot and having something to protect your feet in the real-world. I routinely do 25-30 mile weeks and have done so in this shoe for over three months. Even though the rubber on the bottom doesn't seem to be the type that should stand up to log road running, there is still plenty of life left in the tread. I do expect they wont have the life of a dedicated road-running shoe, but given all of the other benefits, this doesn't bother me at all. They are also the lightest shoe I've ever run in. It's almost like there is nothing on your feet! The mesh upper is so open and breathable that even after a long run, they are almost dry (and I sweat a lot in the summer). For those natural runners out there, you can really feel the ground. This is important on the trail but also on the road because if you are like me you have to step off the road quite often due to on-coming trafic. Also, I do martial arts, and several gym workouts each week. This shoe has proven to excel in those activities too. I've never been able to have one shoe that can do it all!! I plan to buy several pair and hope Inov-8 never stops making them!

5ideal distance trail runner, part minimalist, part traditional.
By Tetsu Noguchi
Having recently purchased a pair of Vivobarefoot Breathos for the trail and New Balance Minimus Zeros for the road, I quickly realized that while these are where I want to be, and my older traditional sneakers are where I want to move away from, I can't run in zero drop minimalist sneakers every day, and not yet for distances over 8 miles. I needed something that had more cushion to help on recovery run days if I wanted to keep running every day. While I was thinking about Mizuno Elixirs/Ronins, Saucony Kinvaras/Viratas, Merrell Mix Masters and Lunaspider sneakers, I spotted the Sportiva Helios at my favorite running store, ZombieRunner while taking a look at the Kinvara and Virata sneakers they had there (As well as the Salomon S-Lab).One of the owners and one staff member said that the Sportiva Helios sneakers were among their favorites and each owned a pair, I thought I'd give it a test run. Lo and behold, these sneakers turned out to be the perfect in-betweener to help me in my adjustment towards minimalist running while still offering enough cushion to show some mercy during longer runs or for recovery runs. This is primarily a trail shoe and a fix over the previous generation as a plate has been added to protect against sharp objects poking through the outsole. The shoe, despite having much more sole than other minimalist sneakers, still remains shockingly light, and the upper mesh seems a near seamless fit with no stitching areas that rub any parts of my feet to blisters. What's more, the insole and rock plate are removable, and the base of the emptied sneaker remains nicely finished and easy to run in. They do run a half size small, but that's okay. While not strictly a summer shoe, these sneakers are highly breathable and can be worn sock-less without worry or discomfort.Ride height is much lower than traditional sneakers, but still nowhere near as low to the ground as the breathos or minimus sneakers. The 4 mm drop is shallow enough to feel near minimalist, but that little drop, coupled with the extra outsole is still plenty merciful on your feet if you're still transitioning. It's hard to believe that the full length rock plate, which is ridiculously thin, actually protects your feet, but it does. Even more surprising is the effect the rock plate has on overall rigidity, considering how flexible the rock plate is, but you notice the difference when running with and without the plate. The sneaker is designed for trail use, but can handle light road as well. In terms of usage, it's ideally suited if you are planning a, say, 8 mile run, where 1 or 2 of the miles is on road. The rubber lugs on the outsole are fairly soft and malleable compared to road shoe outsoles, but still more rigid and structured than more typical trail shoes. So if you mix things up but lean towards more trail than road, these sneakers should last a very long time. The toe-box is reasonably wide, though not cavernous. And the mid foot is very snug and tight. The heel is also very snug and there's no slippage. Even when sweating, I didn't notice heel slippage, and there was no rubbing that caused skin irritation over an 8 mile run.On the trail, forward/backward motion is crisp with great stopping power, grip, and springy kick off. On the side to side, there is plenty of grip for the trail, but it's not quite as side grippy as the breathos. I think this is because of the way the lugs and ridges are designed. Having said that, the waved ridges, open straight across from edge to edge, does make mud running a less sticky affair and there's plenty of flow for water, mitigating hydroplaning over slippery rocks. The lugs seem to dig deep into wet rock making it "seem" much safer. Still not quite super grippy, and the slightly decreased tactioception from the thicker sole makes you just a touch less sure-footed than in the breathos. Even still, it felt plenty grippy on drier areas and there was no muscle burn or bone pain after the run like you get with the breathos over rocky/boulder terrain. The Sportiva Helios also really shines on the longer the run. On the Breathos, I get noticeably tired at around the 8 mile mark on trails, but with the Sportiva Helios, my feet feel ready to take on much more. For long distances, I would choose the Sportiva Helios over the Vivobarefoot Breathos every time, if only for the improved endurance and pain free run where I need it most. All told, this is my favorite new trail running sneaker, and I imagine it will be with me a long time.Cheers and happy running!
