By M. Williams
If you're looking for a solid trail shoe with minimal padding and an amazing rock plate, these shoes are amazing! I had been running trails in track flats prior to getting the 101s, and while I enjoyed the low profile and flexibility they offered, they were lacking in the protection department - and running in the Rockies, it's nice to have a little something there to protect from the terrain. There is not a lot to these shoes, you sit very close to the ground, which is ideal for trails - there have been times where, had I been wearing a more traditional shoe, I would have rolled my ankle on the terrain. With these, you're pretty much right on the ground, so there's nothing to roll off of. As mentioned, the rock plate does an excellent job of keeping those pointy edges from bruising the bottom of your feet. Makes blasting down rocky trails, well...a blast! True minimalists will probably shy away from the rock plate and the heel toe drop (not certain, but I want to say its something like 10mm), though it certainly doesn't feel like it.Cons:-The only real concern I've had with these are the way the shoe curves inward, seems to rub my pinky toe, especially on longer runs. For me it hasn't been anything thats rubbed raw or anything, but I have noticed little callouses forming on my pinky toes.-Not that its a big deal, but I'm not a big fan of the special laces that are supposed to help your shoes from coming untied. They only seem to work when I'm trying to actually untie them! :)-When I wear these on the roads, I definitely feel it in my calves more the next day than on the trails or with more of a road shoe on the road. I would suspect that is due to the minimal padding and my calves absorbing more of the shock - not necessarily a bad thing, but it is worth mentioning. All in all, I highly recommend these shoes for trail runners who don't want a lot of shoe, but do want a little protection. Every time I put these on I love the way they feel. Can't wait to see what the MT110s and NB Minimus will have to offer!UPDATE - Blew a hole in the sidewall at the aforementioned pinky spot at around 320 miles. I'm 6'1" and about 185 lbs, so you may get more/less mileage out of them depending on your size and usage. I would guess that about 300 of those 320 miles were all on trails, so they got used and weren't really babied! There's a very good chance I will be buying another pair.

I've ran more than 100ks with this pair, mostly on trails. These are very light and comfortable even in rough terrain.Compared to my old pairs, my feet never really felt battered after running on mt101's on trails, no heelstrikes nor overstriding. My feet are landing at the right, natural spots - the forefoot to midfoot. The design is wicked, I had never seen a shoe that immitates the color of a green beetle.Anton and NB really nailed it with this one.

By John Short
Being new at trail running and the minimalist running style, I tried vibrams 5 fingers and the running sandle described in "Born To Run". I liked both of these but felt a little too unprotected. The 101's solved all these issues and still felt very minimal. I have done some trail runs and speed workouts on the track and they performed great. Very light, feet felt very natural at ground strike and for the first time in any running shoe, I had no blisters from the very first run. Great product and am anxiously awaiting the "minimalist" shoe to come out in early 2011.
