I ordered these shoes 9 months ago in anticipation of using them in a local winter race if surface conditions turned out to be poor. Tried them immediately with spikes, and found them stable on snow packed roads and comfortable too. Then I replaced the spikes with the inserts that protect the threads when the spikes are not being used. During the warmer months I used the shoes only a few times over relatively short distances in the neighborhood, just to be sure my feet were used to them. Finally, on the eve of the December race I set out to reinstall the spikes. It took me two happy hours, for the protective caps turned out to be very soft metal and had worn flat, and the screwdriver notches were totally gone.A New Balance representative tells me that this shoe is not meant to be used on streets, only on trails. Nothing that came with the shoe indicated such a limitation, but I had no prior experience with replaceable spikes and perhaps that's a given. The caps had worn flat in less than 25 miles, mostly on asphalt streets or packed earth shoulders. This is the first trail shoe I've had that is not street-worthy.
