By K. Scott
1/14/11 - updating my rating to 5 after several months of wearing this shoe.It looks like Mizuno has hit the sweet spot with the wave ascend 5. I was a huge fan of the wave ascend 1-2-3, but all of the cushion was taken out of the 4's in an apparent attempt to create a lower ride. I gave the 4 one or two stars and emailed Mizuno my complaints, and they actually responded to my email. It looks like they have responded with their product, too, as it has much more cushion than the wave ascend 4. It seems to be a hybrid between the ascend 3 and 4. If the cushioning holds up for a month or two, I will adjust my rating to a 5. They feel great right now.

I bought these shoes a few months ago and I have had the opportunity to run on lots of different surfaces and my conclusions is that these are great shoes. The first time I ran in these shoes was on a small track in the Arizona mountains and I could not believe how much grip they had. I tried on a lot of shoes before I bough these on amazon including the brooks cascadia and these shoes are by far the best. They are lightweight supportive and have tremendous grip on all surfaces. My feet tend to run narrow so I have always liked Mizuno and the wave ascend 5 is a home run.

By nwrunner
I have been running in Mizuno wave shoes made for the road for several months. I was impressed by the lightness and flexibillity of the road shoes (specifically because they are a stabillity shoe). I ordered the wave ascend, in preparation for spring when I could hit the trails near my house (mostly due to the light lasting past 4pm). I have found them to be much more stiff than the road version. Once I got them out on the trail though, I didnt notice the stiffness. The traction is great in the wet northwest, and the stiffness helped greatly when running down some repaired railroad tracks (piles of fist sized crushed rock didnt phase these shoes).I would recommend these shoes for someone to use only on trails. My best case scenario would be to have 2 pairs of Mizuno's, 1 for road, and these for trail.
