By Yosemite Sam
Very supportive underfoot with a full length plastic plate that protects your feet from feeling the rocks. Broad toe box. Very breathable and light on the foot. Heel sockets into the heel cup nicely. If you have a high instep the laces don't accomodate this condition very well leaving the tongue with minimal coverage of the top of the foot. This shows especially at the middle of the shoe where the montrail name appears on the white fabric band that is part of the lacing. The lacing does however pull the shoe effectively snug around your foot making it feel as if you are wearing a glove on your foot.I use these shoes for lightweight backpacking with under 25 pounds and it is a superb shoe for this purpose. It is pretty grippy on most surfaces especially damp rock. I have slipped several times on rock around a falls on one of my trips and this shoe held nicely to the rock surfaces even though the lug structure is not as deep as one would want for a shoe used for backpacking or trail running. The rubber used must be interesting stuff because this is the second pair of Montrails I have owned with the same lug structure and both have been durable and grippy.

By Paul H. Duray Jr.
The Montrail Mountain Masochist II is a trail running shoe that falls into the stability category. I selected this shoe after getting properly fitted by my local running store staff using gait analysis, discussing my training/racing goals; and trying other stability models. (I'm a 5' 10" 168lb male racing at ten mile/half/full marathon distances both road and trail.) I've since made trail training runs in this model at the 10-13 mile distances, and completed a ten-mile trail race in them. Fit: Overall, the shoes feel very secure on the feet with no shifting or sliding about when running over mixed terrain. The heel cup securely cradles the heel without having to resort to any special lacing technique. The toe box is just roomy enough to keep the toes free and happy. Cushioning: The cushioning under the heel is very evident and quite enjoyable, particularly when clomping down a hill at speed. Those who are more prone to land mid-foot will experience slightly less cushioning. These shoes felt so good, I toyed with the idea of running an on-road marathon in them until logic won the day and I returned to my well worn Brooks Adrenaline road shoes for that race. Stability: These shoes did a good job of controlling my mild pronation. Quite a secure feel on the trail. Weight: Unlike other trail shoes that I've tried, these felt remarkably light on the feet. Overall, the Montrail Mountain Masochist II has become my "go-to" trail shoe, and I will be using them more to train for the North Force Endurance Challenge marathon. Light, well-fitting, and comfortable, they are an excellent choice for someone looking for a solid performing stability shoe for trail work.

By Jeremy L. Wilt
I absolutely love these shoes so much that I bought a second pair as a backup for when mine wear out. They're amazingly comfortable and I wear them for running, trail running, hiking, and as gym shoes. I weight lift in them, do plyometric workouts, and everything else possible. They're hands-down the best hikers I've ever owned and they're built to last, so I expect to get at least a year of heavy use out of each pair.If I could rate them any higher, I would.
