5Whoa now! Reconsider before NOT buying these!
By kcomb
I am very critical when it comes to shoes. I actually think I have a running shoe addiction; some (like my wife) would call it a problem. In the past 12 months I have tried a few shoes and the collection in my closet includes: Saucony Peregrine, Saucony Kinvara, Brooks Cascadia 7, Salomon xt wings 2, New Balance Trail 110 and Merrell Trail Gloves. Out of this bunch the Trail Gloves worked best, however I was struggling to find a shoe to take to the trails for my 20+ mile runs as the TG's were just a little too light for me. Enter the Mix Master 2's, referred to me by my chiropractor who is also an ultra runner. As with the TG's, these shoes feel like they were made for me and my feet. They are snug where I want them to be (around the heel) while giving me the space I need around the toes. They feel just right and they are light...something that turns out to be very important to me. For example, a 50 mi run would take about 80,000 total strides, meaning each shoe is lifted 40,000 times. There are 32,000 ounces in a ton, etc. Makes sense that every ounce saved counts, a LOT.These shoes also have good ventilation - I've gotten them wet while running and they dry out quicker than anything I've owned to date - and they appear to be durable (no issues so far and I know the first generation Mix Master was redesigned to eliminate some of the durability concerns). They also look good and they make me feel fast.Bottom-line, I have decided that I am now a Merrell running shoe fan for life. If you are looking for a lightweight shoe that will provide enough cushioning to cover the long distances or provide a little more protection while still giving you a neutral and close to the ground feel, these are the shoes for you.One thing to point out, I had to go one full size down on these, so beware if you're buying online. And don't get suckered into buying your running shoes too large - too large can injure you just as much as too small and, no, your feet will not swell 1/2 an inch in length, no matter how far you run...

3Good somewhat minimal shoe, a bit too pointy
By TiM
I keep 2 pairs of trail running shoes. The first, my daily runner, is to be flat, highly flexible and with a very thin sole. The second pair is used for long (>20miles), rocky trails where I have found I require a bit more rock protection. I wore out a pair of NB MT101s in this second role, and needed a new pair of shoes for an upcoming race. The Mix Master II appeared to be a good fit, and I have logged ~200 miles in them now. What I found: My first run was sockless, with the inserts. ~5 miles with good rocky climbs/descents. The majority of my running prior to this was in Merrell Trailgloves, and I was shocked at how high off the ground I felt and how `cushy' the sole was. The 4mm drop was also strange to me, and I struggled a bit with some heel striking on the downhills. I quickly got over this, and now the shoe feels good underfoot, though I still have some issues with the stack height, I'm less steady on my feet with the extra height. Still, I was able to FLY downhill without fear of trashing my feet. And the soles gripped well going back up. Now I have found that socks are necessary, but I removed the insert. I can feel the rocks underneath, but only that they are present. The whole shoe is a bit more flexible that the MT101, and rides nicely. My only problems have been that the slight point to the toe of the shoe puts some pressure on my BIG TOES, which really only becomes an issue after 10 miles. At that point it starts becoming distracting, and heading toward mild pain. I don't think these will work well for me as very long distance shoes, but I have done 20 miles without issue. The more downhill in the run, the more an issue (and the 20 miles was the Shut In trail race, or all uphill.) Also, I should point out that the cleats will grab mud and hold onto it. My second run in the shoes was through some of the sticky stuff, and the shoes were much heavier after the run.The soles look good with only a little wear showing in my typical wear pattern. The upper is typical of Merrell, and I expect the shoes to last a long while.

4Light and solid
By Jason Necros
I've been buying Merrell hiking shoes for years, but this is my first purchase of their running shoe line. I usually use vivobarefoot for trail running, but I forgot to pack them for a recent trip and snatched up Merrell's Mix Master from a local shopThese shoes are quite sturdy and very light. They breathe a lot more than my usual trail runners, because about 85-90% of the shoe is light meshThe overall feel is similar to a vibram in terms of a 'naked' foot feel, but there is no toe grip obviously so the sensation is not completeSole is moderately treaded with about 1/8 inch bumps placed at 1/4 to 1/2 inch intervals, fair enough for light to moderate trailsThe one thing I do not like is that you have to be careful of small roots, as the thin mesh might get damaged easier than huskier counterparts, but like I said these shoes are for your light to moderate trails, so just be careful taking these into wild areas

5Great trail running shoe
By Cdlambgo
Moved from the Masochist to the Badrock to try out the FluidPost stability to help with pronation control and more technical terrain. Great grip on a wet, hilly trail run Outdry was a plus. Good feel on a flatter, gravel trail. I am liking the pronation control better than my Masochists. Thinking this is another great Montrail winner!

4Good Shoe Similar to Old Hardrock
By Matthew D. Symonds
I was worried and a little shocked that my local REI had no Montrail shoes anymore. They were consistently the best fitting shoe with my orthotics. These seem to fit great after first outing and I like the waterproof Outdry. They may be a little warm come fairer weather. I wish they still made boots. I am monitoring comments so if anyone has found a very similar fit to these please let me know for boots.

5Excellent Product
By Darwin Anliker
I have been running for over 20 years and found this to be the most reliable running shoe currently on the market. I have had major foot surgery and this product has offered the strongest support. It does appear that shoe sizes run smaller than Nike, Addidas. A half size smaller in my case.

5The Land Rover of Running Shoes!
By Kip
I have been running competitively for 28 years. Triathlons, Trail racing, Marathons, and Ultramarathons. I am a Retired Vet from the Spec Ops side of the house and know how to rate your personal Kit (Gear).I have heard the hype of these shoes and had to try for myself.I had been using another top brand for Ultra's, but my only issue with them was after about 4 to 6 weeks I had ran them out. The next step was carefully researching a durable trail running shoe I could keep around for awhile longer. The UK Gear PT1000 seem up to the task.I run mostly on rough technical trails, sand, rocks, log crossings, mud, snow, ice, and sometimes pavement and asphault (rare unless I have too!) the soles of the shoes have held up well and have not given me the slip as much as I thought they would. I had been using the cleated Solomon Speedcross 2 and 3 running shoes and was worried that the PT1000 would not be as good off road as my other's. The cleated bottom of the PT 1000 I would describe like a set of All Terrian Tires you would have on your SUV. They hold their own well enough for me.I am very Satified!

3Tread outlasts the shoe
By Can'tStop
The tread on these shoes is great. Great traction but not too tough that it can't go on the road or track. After 600 some odd miles in less than a year the carbon rubber holds up just great, but the foam rubber is starting to rip apart pretty badly. The top of the shoe is very very weak, particularly the stitching around the toe. In colorado we have a lot of rocks and cactus, and they shreaded the toe of the shoe and ripped the stitching out in other spots. They're great shoes with phenomenal tread, but the rest of the shoe is not as tough as advertised and in my opinion is not worth the price tag.

5Everything I love in a trail/hybrid runner
By thecaptainchas
I am a semi-minimalist runner who frequents roads and trails and averages 40-50 miles a week. By "semi-minimalist," I mean I still wear cushioned shoes on runs over 20 miles, and I wear zero-drop or barefoot shoes on anything less than 8 miles. Most of my favorite shoes have a 0-4mm heel-toe drop. This shoe--with the combined last of the Minimus, the super-grippy lugs, the light weight, and the easy price-tag--easily satisfies all of my needs in one package. Right out of the box, I took them on 11 miles of hilly road running, and I have since taken them on about a dozen miles of technical single-track, both wet and dry. The shoes are fast and secure. After a couple of days, I can say comfortably that they are probably my favorite all-purpose running shoe. I look forward to racing with them this upcoming weekend in a trail half-marathon, and I may even use them on some upcoming trail ultras I have in the spring. I definately will be purchasing more pairs of these. Anyone who likes fast, semi-minimalist (or "reduced," or whatever you wish to call it), lightweight shoes for all surfaces, this is your shoe.

5Thank you Anton. You have saved running for me.
By Greg P.
I started running last October, but after a month, I injured myself by overuse with bad form in some old running shoes. I took a month off, thinking that all I needed were new shoes. All the signs of expired shoes were there.I picked up some Ghost 4's and started running again. Everything felt great except that I felt weighed down by all the rubber cushion. By this point I started focusing on forefoot running, so I figured most of my pain was my form change. It was true, but running in the shoes felt a lot more cumbersome. Plus, all the cushion was in the wrong areas for my newly-acquired form (all in the heel). It was strange, considering this was the shoe that was recommended to me.After a week or two of running low mileage, I felt pain that I can only describe as my foot and leg being pulled apart from each other. I wasn't aware of what it could be at the time, but after some research, the location of pain looked like it could be shin splints. I tried running some trails, and I felt a little better, but still felt weighed down by the shoes. The shoes were exacerbating my situation of form change, even though the shoes felt OK for the most part. In the end, they gave me too much confidence.I ditched the Ghost 4's (great shoes, but not for my style and foot type) and tried barefoot running and felt immensely better. I then started looking for some trail shoes shortly after.Skipping over debates of shoes, I finally went with the MT110s. I knew I wanted something minimal, but also a jack of all trades (just in case I want to mix it up).I got them, laced them up and hit the trails. I went 2.25 miles feeling free and light with plenty room for my feet to feel natural (no socks needed). What an experience! I've never ever felt this good in running shoes! After discovering trails a couple of weeks ago, I knew this was the way to run for me, and the MT110s confirm this. I even ran on the road, and it felt just fine.I haven't been able to stop smiling since I got these shoes; they've rekindled my spirit and reminded me why running is so much fun.------------------------------UPDATE: It's now been several weeks since I've received these shoes, and they're still going strong. I've been doing daily trail runs that feature all different types of terrain, and I have had no problems whatsoever. My legs and feet have never felt better! Best part? No injuries!

5this is the one
By Sanchodancho
I have been a 10-25 mile a week runner for the better of 10 years. I managed a sporting goods store for a hot minute. I got tech'd by all of the brands I carried. I was fed plenty of propaganda by shoe manufacturers about all the "necessary' corrective elements that went into the design and technology of each of their respective shoes. I "pronate". I understand that diagnosis. As well as the others (supernate, neutral gate, etc). I bought the propaganda (mostly because a free pair of shoes came along). Years removed from that, I decided to give the "minimalist" designs a try. I've been through a number of shoes. In my opinion, the New Balance 110 is the gold standard. The fit is better than a slipper. Emidiate motion control and response. Drains quickly. The synthetic upper looks great after long muddy runs. The only thing more true to my natural mechanics would be to run barefoot. I run trails; so that't not an option. I'm sure the next model will be tits. But I'm buying 2 more pairs of these. Just to make sure I've got something I love to run in for the immediate future. Cheers amigos.

5Look great and are very light. good compromise between traditional and minimal.
By D. MCKICHAN
I wanted something I could use "off road" at the local nature center paths. I have tried a wide variety of shoes over the past year running the gamut from traditional cushioned to full minimal vibram's and Merrell's. The Kinvara 2's have become my favorites and the shoe I compared all others to now. The Gel Racer's compare as well as anythign else I have tried. They have a very simialr feel to the Kinvara's. They are quite as lightweight and have a little greater heel drop differential, but they feel very similar on the foot. The Gel Racer's are supposed to weigh in at around 8.8 oz in a Men's 9 which is about 2 oz's more than the Kinvara's but still on the lightweight side of things as far as shoes go. The heel to toe drop is approx. 6mm which is less then most traditioanl shoes (10-14mm) but more then a true minimal which is usually (0-2mm). 6mm is a good compromise in my opinion. I wear size 12's and that is what I order here. I found the fit to be spot on and these are very comfortable. The upper is well made. Seems to be better quality than the Kinvara's. The heel offers gel cushioning which doesn't mean as much to me as I tend to run more on my midfoot and forefoot these days, but even on hard roads the rear of the shoe is very comfortable. The forefoot is not really that well padded, again in line with minimalism. The material is much tougher than that found on the kinvara. There is a rock plate enclosed as well. On actual trails the traction is great and padding fine. On hard road surfaces the padding isn't quite there if you are going on longer runs on a purely paved trail. 5k-8k or so is fine but I don't know if I would go longer on a hard surface. Again though this is a trail shoe and on grass and dirt or a mix of trail/pavement this is a great shoe. I have run an 8k trail race in it in addition to training with it and the shoe performed very well.Color is nice as well. I went with the purple, black, yellow and it looks great. Overall a great shoe for trail racing.

They are purple and a little flashy, but they are very cool and comfortable to wear. My friend couldn't wear them because she has very high arches, but I wear them comfortably and I have normal to low arches. If that helps anybody.

5Great Shoes
By Q
Been training in these for a few weeks and finally got to wear them in a 10 mile trail run. Awesome shoes. In years past after this race with other trail shoes my feet were sore for days. My feet never felt so good after a race before. These are lightweight and well ventilated. I have had foot issues in the past (Plantar Fasciitis) and was going through a recovery period from another injury to my arch. I wore these in the race and felt no pain during or after the race. They actually seemed to improve my condition. I would highly recommend these.
